(24) Russia-Czech Rep
Highlights
Report
Having been two-nil up and totally in control of the game at halftime, the Czech Republic ought to have gone four-two down in the eighty-eighth minute when Radimov screwed his shot wide from inside the box (an incident interesting for an onside decision). Russia played very well in the second half, contrary to the first, and were very close to dragging their opponents out of the tournament. Disaster was averted for the Czech team when Smicer, the man whose wedding was two days before the final and would generated a story 'Cibulkova 2016', scored a great equalising goal in the eighty-ninth minute to save his side. The group finished as Ger-7 Cze-4 Ita-4 Rus-1 but by virtue of beating Italy, the Czech Republic advanced.
Euro 1996 was a success for referee Anders Frisk, who did a good job in this typical Eastern match (not difficult in terms of managing ref-player and player-player conflicts). It was amazing that this 'unfashionable' match, played at the same time as Germany-Italy and in front of a sparse crowd at Anfield, would go on to be one of the tournament's cult matches: and was, in the second half, quite thrilling. I guess that the notoriety of the game would go on to help Frisk too. To analyse the performance - the biggest positive was his foul recognition, and particularly excellent positional movement in order to aid his calls. The biggest weakness was some arbitriness in disciplinary control, giving six correct cautions in total, but not sanctioning very blatant cynical fouls by Sergej Gorlukovic (21') and Jiri Nemec (48').

Overall, if the game was more difficult (and more medially relevant) than UEFA imagined when making the appointments in late March, then Anders Frisk showed he was up to the task and fared well.
